Biograd
na More is located on a peninsula surrounded by marinas and a
quay that affords an inimitable view of one of the most picturesque
maritime straits: the Pasman Channel and the islands dotted around
here. It's no wonder that the successful history of the industry
resulted in such a diverse array of tourist, cultural, sporting
and catering facilities.
The neighbourhood of national parks on sea (the Kornati islands),
mountain (the Velebit Paklenica), river (the Krka Waterfalls),
lakes (the Plitvice Lakes, nature parks (Telascica on Long Island)
and Lake of Vrana rich with freshwater fish on whose banks shore
birds have settled, and numerous islands and islets in the lovely
Pasman canal offer guests that visit Biograd the possibility
of excursions to places that are among the most beautiful regions
in Croatia.
The tourist development of Biograd started between the two world wars. The first guest, the Czechs, started to visit Biograd during the 1920s. The first hotel was erected in 1935 on the location of the present hotel Ilirija. A number of cultural and entertainment programs and sports events are offered in the summer months: folk feasts in the open, on the swimming pool next to Hotel Ilirija, at the cinema; sports tournaments and competitions are regularly held.
Biograd is a port frequented by boaters whose destination is the Kornati Archipelago. Regattas, sailing schools and other nautical activities are organized throughout the year. Biograd's marinas have 1000 berths in the sea and 200 places on the land. They are open throughout the year.
Biograd is the royal Croatian city that in the 11th century was
the seat of Croatian kings and bishops, and in 1102 saw the coronation
of King Koloman, king of Croatia and Hungary. The splendours
of the past are also witnessed by the religious buildings - the
Parish Church of St Anastasia (1761) the early-Romanesque Church
of St Anthony (13th century), the Church of St Rochus (16th century),
while the Basilica of St John (11th century) survived a Venetian
sacking in 1125. More about the history can be found in the local
museum.
A hundred meters from the center of town is a string of various
sandy and pebbled beaches, lined with a crystal clear sea. There
is a modern tennis centre and many recreational sporting facilities
like the aquagun, water skiing, wind surfing, boats, diving and
many ball games.
Culinary skills and warm service in a pleasant Mediterranean atmosphere of the Biograd restaurants, Dalmatian inns and pizzerias promise the utmost enjoyment in the homemade specialities of our famous Dalmatian cuisine that uses vegetables from its own gardens and fish from its ecologically clean sea (Dalmatian smoked ham, cheese, lamb, sea shells, fresh fish, clams, Dalmatian wines and aperitifs). |
